How to Install a Frameless Glass Balustrade Using the Wedge-Loc Slim System
If you’re aiming for a slim, subtle, and stylish balustrade solution, the Wedge-Loc Slim is one of the best options available. Designed for domestic and light commercial use, this dry-glaze system delivers the sleek look of a frameless balustrade in a more compact profile, without compromising on safety or strength.
At Fusion Glass Ltd, we supply the full Wedge-Loc Slim system along with custom-cut laminated glass, so you can complete your installation with confidence. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get it done right.
What Makes Wedge-Loc Slim Different?
The Wedge-Loc Slim system is essentially a scaled-down version of its big brother, the Wedge-Loc Duo. It uses the same mechanical wedge-locking system to hold glass panels in place, but the channel itself is narrower and more discreet. This makes it ideal for low-level balconies, garden terraces, and decking areas where a slimmer look is preferred.
It’s also a fully dry-fit system, meaning no resins, adhesives, or handrails are required – just precise alignment and smart design.
What You’ll Need
• Wedge-Loc Slim base-fix aluminium channel
• Wedge kits (inner and outer wedges) and rubber setting blocks
• Laminated glass panels (usually 13.5mm or 17.5mm thick)
• Fixings suitable for your base (timber, steel, or concrete)
• Allen key or ratchet
• Suction cups, spirit level, measuring tape
• String line or laser level
• Optional: channel cladding or cover trims
Step 1: Prepare Your Installation Area
Begin by ensuring your base is flat, level, and structurally sound. The Wedge-Loc Slim system is designed for surface mounting, so it needs to be fixed directly to the top of concrete, steel, or solid timber.
Lay out your channel positions and drill according to the fixing holes in the channel (or mark your own based on site conditions). Use resin anchors or heavy-duty fixings to secure the channel firmly. Getting this step right is key—if your base isn’t level, it will throw off your glass alignment later.
Step 2: Insert Setting Blocks
Before adding the glass, place rubber setting blocks into the bottom of the channel. These protect the glass from hard contact and lift it to the correct height within the frame.
Typically, you’ll want one block around 50mm in from each end of the panel. If needed, add packers to adjust for minor variances in glass height.
Step 3: Lower in the Glass Panels
Using suction cups, gently lower the first glass panel into the channel so it sits on the rubber blocks. Align it roughly in place and use a laser level or string line across the top edges to ensure everything remains level and in line as you install each panel.
Leave a 5mm gap between panels for thermal expansion and optional silicone sealing if used outdoors.
Step 4: Lock the Glass in Place
With the glass in position, install the inner and outer wedge kits on both sides of the panel. These are mechanical wedges that lock together as you tighten them, applying pressure to grip the glass securely.
Use a ratchet or Allen key to gradually tighten the wedges. Work evenly on both sides of the panel until it is fully locked in place. Then repeat this process for the remaining panels.
Step 5: Final Checks and Finishes
Once all panels are installed and tightened:
• Check everything is level and secure.
• Clip in any cover trims or fascia cladding to hide the channel edge.
• Clean the glass and aluminium using a non-abrasive cleaner.
• Apply silicone sealant between panels if desired.
Top Tips from Fusion Glass Ltd
• Always measure your glass after installing the channel. Measure from channel base to desired glass height, then subtract 10mm for clearance.
• Use 13.5mm or 17.5mm toughened laminated glass for most domestic installs.
• Make sure the fixing substrate is solid—don’t mount into flags or unsupported timber.
Why Wedge-Loc Slim?
• Ultra-slim channel profile – perfect for a minimal aesthetic
• Dry-glaze system – no curing time or mess
• Quick and adjustable installation
• Fully compliant with domestic safety standards
