Frameless glass balustrades
Fusion Glass Ltd supplies high-quality frameless glass balustrades designed to deliver a clean, modern aesthetic while providing safety across a wide range of applications. Frameless systems are commonly used on balconies, decking, patios, staircases, and floor edges where uninterrupted views and natural light are a priority.
As part of our wider range of glass balustrades, frameless systems remove visible posts and rails to create a seamless structural glass barrier. These systems are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and are supplied to meet current UK building regulations.
Whether your project is modern or traditional, our frameless glass balustrades are designed to complement any architectural style, delivering a clean, minimalist finish without compromising on strength or safety.

Frameless Glass Balustrade Design and Aesthetic
Frameless glass balustrades are chosen for their elegant simplicity and architectural impact. With no visible posts or rails interrupting the view, these systems allow light to flow freely through a space while maintaining a strong safety barrier.
This style is particularly popular for modern homes, balconies, and terraces, but it also complements more traditional properties where a discreet, aesthetically pleasing solution is required. Compared to post and handrail glass balustrades, frameless systems prioritise openness and minimal structure.

Frameless Glass Balustrade Systems Explained
A frameless glass balustrade system secures glass panels using a structural base channel rather than posts or rails. The glass is mechanically fixed using dry-glaze wedge technology, providing complete control over glass alignment and long-term stability.
Fusion Glass Ltd supplies a range of proven balustrade systems, including Wedge-Loc Slim, Wedge-Loc Duo, and POSIglaze. Each system offers different mounting options, adjustability, and sightline profiles depending on the requirements of the particular project.
All systems are supplied as complete solutions, including aluminium base channels, wedge kits, finishing trims, and compatible glass panels.
Glass Thicknesses and Safety Glass Options
Glass thickness is a critical factor in frameless glass balustrades. Because there is no supporting handrail or post system, the glass panels themselves must provide structural strength.
Frameless systems typically use laminated glass, manufactured from multiple layers of toughened glass bonded together for safety. Common glass thicknesses include 17.5mm and 21.5mm, depending on balustrade height, building regulations, and whether the system is being used on balconies or staircases.
For projects where a post-based system may be more suitable, you can also view our post and glass balustrades.

Wedge-Loc Duo Frameless Glass Balustrade Installation Guide
The Wedge-Loc Duo system is a robust, fully mechanical frameless glass balustrade channel system designed for strength, adjustability, and a clean architectural finish. It uses a dry-glaze wedge mechanism to secure laminated glass panels without adhesives, clamps, or handrails.
This guide explains how to install a frameless glass balustrade using the Wedge-Loc Duo system.
Fusion Glass Ltd also supplies and supports POSIglaze and Wedge-Loc Slim, with separate installation guides available for those systems.
What Is Wedge-Loc Duo?
Wedge-Loc Duo is an aluminium channel balustrade system that secures glass using adjustable inner and outer wedges. Once tightened, the wedges apply controlled pressure to lock the glass firmly in place, creating a strong, compliant installation suitable for both domestic and commercial applications.
The Duo system offers excellent structural performance and is commonly used on balconies, terraces, patios, raised decking, and stair voids where a frameless appearance is required.
What You’ll Need
To install a Wedge-Loc Duo frameless balustrade system, you’ll typically require:
-
Wedge-Loc Duo aluminium base-fix or side-fix channel
-
Wedge-Loc Duo inner and outer wedge kits
-
Toughened laminated glass panels (typically 17.5mm or 21.5mm)
-
Fixings suitable for concrete, timber, or structural steel
-
Rubber setting blocks and packers
-
Suction cups and rubber mallet
-
Allen key or ratchet (for wedge tightening)
-
Spirit level, laser level, or string line
-
Optional cover plates or finishing trims
Step 1: Prepare the Substrate
Ensure the fixing surface is structurally sound and level. Concrete or steel substrates are ideal, though timber can be used where suitably reinforced.
Position the Wedge-Loc Duo channel and mark fixing points. Secure the channel using appropriate heavy-duty fixings, ensuring it runs perfectly level along its full length. A level channel is essential for correct glass alignment.
Step 2: Insert Setting Blocks
Before installing the glass, place rubber setting blocks into the channel. These support the glass weight, control height, and prevent direct contact with the aluminium channel.
Setting blocks are typically positioned around 50mm from each edge of the glass panel.
Step 3: Install the Glass Panels
Using suction cups, carefully lower each laminated glass panel into the channel so it rests on the setting blocks.
Maintain a 5mm gap between adjacent glass panels to allow for expansion. Use a laser level or string line across the top of the glass to ensure consistent height and alignment along the run.
Step 4: Fit and Tighten the Wedges
Insert the Wedge-Loc Duo inner and outer wedges on both sides of each glass panel. Using an Allen key or ratchet, tighten the wedges gradually and evenly.
As the wedges expand, they mechanically lock the glass in place. Once tightened, the system becomes extremely rigid without the need for adhesives or wet glazing.
Repeat this process for each panel.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Once all panels are secure, clip on any cover plates or finishing trims to conceal fixings and complete the clean, frameless appearance.
Clean the glass and channel and carry out a final visual check to ensure consistent alignment and wedge tightness.
Installation Tips from Fusion Glass Ltd
-
Measure glass after the channel is installed for best accuracy
-
Allow approximately 10mm tolerance from channel base to finished glass height
-
Always use toughened laminated glass for safety and compliance
-
Maintain consistent gaps between panels for expansion and external sealing if required
