Stand-Off Juliet Balcony Installation Guide
A stand-off Juliet balcony provides effective fall protection across full-height windows or French doors while maintaining a clean, modern appearance. Instead of using posts or channels, the glass is face-fixed using stainless steel stand-off pins, creating a minimalist design with maximum light and visibility.
At Fusion Glass Ltd, we supply bespoke drilled laminated glass panels and high-quality stainless steel stand-off fixings, specifically suited to Juliet balcony installations.
Before You Start
Juliet balconies act as fall-protection systems, so careful planning and correct fixing into the structure are essential.
Before installation:
-
Ensure the surrounding structure is structurally sound (masonry, concrete, steel, or reinforced timber)
-
Confirm there is sufficient space either side of the opening for stand-off fixings
-
Use appropriate PPE at all times
-
Glass panels should always be handled by a minimum of two people
For timber constructions, additional structural support behind the fixing face may be required.
Glass Thickness & Size Guide (Important)
The required glass thickness depends on the overall width of the Juliet balcony:
-
Up to 1700mm wide: 17.5mm toughened laminated glass
-
1800mm – 3000mm wide: 21.5mm toughened laminated glass
-
3000mm – 3750mm wide: 25.5mm toughened laminated glass
Ordering Note
Stand-off Juliet balconies require 200mm of fixing space on each side of the window.
When ordering, take your clear opening size (wall-to-wall) and add 400mm to determine the total glass width required.
This ensures adequate room for the stand-off fixings and correct load transfer.
Tools & Equipment Required
Typical tools required include:
-
Tape measure and marker
-
Spirit level
-
Impact drill and cordless drill
-
Drill bits suitable for masonry, timber, or steel
-
Metric Allen keys / hex bits
-
Stand-off spanner
-
Masking tape (for set-out)
-
Suction cups for glass handling
-
Glass cleaner and soft cloth
Step 1: Set Out the Balcony Position
Clean the fixing surface and mark the centre line of the opening.
Using masking tape, mark:
-
The left and right extents of the glass (including fixing allowance)
-
The vertical positions of the stand-off fixings
Accurate set-out at this stage ensures the glass sits centrally across the opening with even fixing spacing.
Step 2: Drill Fixing Holes
Drill fixing holes according to the substrate:
-
Concrete / masonry: Drill to suit M10 anchors or chemical fixings
-
Steel: Drill clearance holes for M10 bolts or threaded rod
-
Timber: Drill pilot holes into solid structural backing
All holes must be drilled square and level to ensure the stand-off bodies sit flush.
Step 3: Prepare and Install the Stand-Off Bodies
Stand-off fixings are supplied pre-assembled and should be separated before fitting.
-
Fix the stand-off bodies securely to the structure using appropriate fixings
-
Ensure the correct thread depth is engaged into each stand-off body
-
Check alignment and spacing before proceeding
Once installed, all stand-offs should sit flat and aligned vertically.
Step 4: Prepare for Glass Installation
Fit the required washers, bushes, and protective gaskets onto each stand-off stud.
Ensure all contact surfaces are clean to prevent debris being trapped behind the glass.
Step 5: Install the Glass Panel
With at least two installers:
-
Carefully lift the glass panel into position using suction cups
-
Guide the drilled holes over the stand-off studs
-
Check the glass is centred, level, and plumb
The drilled holes allow for small adjustments before final tightening.
Step 6: Secure and Align the Glass
Once the glass is correctly positioned:
-
Fit the decorative stand-off caps
-
Tighten caps gradually using the stand-off spanner
-
Re-check alignment and spacing before fully tightening
Work evenly across all fixings to avoid stressing the glass.
Step 7: Final Checks and Cleaning
Once installation is complete:
-
Ensure all fixings are fully tightened
-
Check the glass is secure with no movement
-
Remove any protective tape or packaging
-
Clean the glass with a mild glass cleaner and soft cloth
