Toughened Glass
Toughened Safety Glass is up to five times stronger than regular glass, allowing architects and builders to incorporate more natural light into designs while maintaining safety. Our toughened glass meets European Safety Standards and is used in various applications. It undergoes a heating and cooling treatment that creates high compressive surface stresses, giving it its increased strength.
Available Thicknesses:
- 6mm
- 8mm
- 10mm
- 12mm
- 15mm
- 19mm
Toughened Laminated Glass
Toughened Laminated Glass is gaining popularity due to its enhanced safety features. An interlayer between two pieces of toughened glass keeps the glass intact if broken, reducing the risk of injury. Architects and builders prefer it for its strength and safety benefits.
Available Thicknesses:
- 11.5mm
- 13.5mm
- 17.5mm
- 21.5mm
- 25.5mm
- 31.5mm

Purchasing a Glass BalustradeBuying a glass balustrade can seem intimidating, but choosing one is straightforward. All our systems are easy to install and can typically be handled by any DIY enthusiast or builder. Below are some common questions from our customers.
-
Do I Need a Handrail? If your balustrade protects a drop of more than 600mm, you should use a handrail or laminated glass. Laminated glass consists of two bonded pieces, with one designed to stay intact if the other fails. The top of the glass is often the weakest point, and a handrail enhances structural integrity, providing extra protection if someone falls against the glass. For frameless glass, consider glass stiffeners as an alternative.
-
Which Balustrade is the Cheapest? The cost of a balustrade mainly depends on the glass. Thicker glass is generally more expensive. Our stainless steel post systems are usually more affordable than frameless channels or spigots because they use thinner glass.
-
How Thick Should the Glass Be on a Glass Balustrade?Glass thickness varies based on the building’s use and occupancy. The glass should not move more than 25mm once secured under a certain force. For domestic properties, internal balustrades usually require less force resistance than external ones. Our general recommendations are: – Stainless steel posts (internal/external): 10mm toughened glass – Frameless glass/spigots (internal): 12mm toughened glass – Frameless glass/spigots (external, <600mm fall) 12mm toughened glass – Frameless glass/spigots (external, >600mm fall with handrail) 15mm toughened glass – Frameless glass/spigots (external, >600mm fall without handrail): 17.5mm toughened laminate glass – Frameless glass/spigots (external, exposed areas): 21.5mm toughened laminate glass
-
What Grade of Stainless Steel Should I Use?We offer stainless products in grades 304 and 316. Both look similar, but grade 316 is more corrosion-resistant. Use grade 304 for internal balustrades and grade 316 for external ones. Near swimming pools or the sea, grade 316 should be mirror polished for extra protection. Regular cleaning with a recommended cleaner prevents discoloration or pitting.
-
Should the Posts/Handrail Be 42mm or 48mm in Diameter? For most domestic applications, 42mm posts/handrails are sufficient. For balustrades over 1.1m in height, like privacy screens, 48mm posts/handrails may be necessary.
-
Will My Balustrade Be Tested? Most of our systems undergo line load testing, and we can provide a test certificate upon request. The strength of a balustrade depends on the fixing material and glass thickness. The balustrade should not move more than 25mm when pressure is applied.
-
How Wide Should the Gap Between Glass Panels Be?In areas accessible to children, gaps between glass panels should not allow a 100mm sphere to pass through. For structural channels, we recommend a 10mm gap.
-
How Long Should Each Glass Panel Be?Ideally, each panel should be no more than 1m wide or 1.1m high to meet testing requirements and ensure easy installation. Dimensions may vary slightly to fit your balustrade.
-
What Height Should My Balustrade Be?Balustrade height is measured from the finished floor level. For internal balustrades, the requirement is 900mm, and for external balustrades, it is 1100mm.
-
Do You Carry Out Site Surveys? We do not conduct site surveys but can provide details of recommended installers. Usually, rough measurements and photos are enough for us to give an accurate price.
-
Do I Need Planning Permission for My Balustrade? Most balustrades do not require planning permission, but it’s best to check with your local planning authority, especially if you live in a conservation area.
-
How Important Is the Material I Am Fixing My Balustrade To?The strength of a balustrade depends on the material it is fixed to. Fixing to solid, structural timber or brickwork is crucial. Avoid fixing too close to the edge of bricks to prevent cracking. Balustrades are not tested when fixed to timber or brickwork.
-
Can Water Drain Away in Frameless Channels? Our frameless channels have pre-drilled holes for water drainage. We can also supply drainage blocks if the balustrade is at the bottom of a slope.
-
What Dimensions Are the Glass Panels? We provide bespoke glass panels to fit your balustrade. Consider ensuring proper securing of the glass. We can supply shaped panels, and it’s better to receive metal work first and then produce templates for accuracy.
-
Can You Supply My Balustrade in Alternative Colours? We can powder coat your balustrade to any RAL chart colour. Contact our sales team for a quote.
-
How Long Do Glass Balustrades Last? Both glass and metal work are durable and designed to last many years. Regular maintenance, especially for stainless steel, is essential. Clean stainless steel products regularly to prevent residue build-up and discoloration.
-
How Much Does a Glass Balustrade Cost?At Fusion Glass, we prioritise customer satisfaction and offer competitive, cost-effective solutions. The cost depends on the balustrade style and size. Use our online Balustrade Calculator for a tailored quote.
-
Are Glass Balustrades Safe?Safety is a priority for us. Our toughened glass undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it is safe for elevated areas like staircases. Refer to our test data or contact our team for more information.
