What Type of Glass Is Used for Pond Glass Windows?

Pond glass windows are typically manufactured from toughened laminated glass rather than single toughened glass.

Toughened laminated glass provides:

• Extra strength
• Improved safety under load
• Greater durability
• Resistance to crack propagation
• Long-term structural integrity

Where specified, heat-soaked glass can be supplied to reduce the risk of spontaneous defects. This is particularly important for thicker laminated units used in deeper ponds.

Each panel is manufactured to withstand water pressure at the specified depth. We do not recommend standard window glass or non-structural glazing for pond installations.

For alternative structural glazing applications beyond pond installations, visit our custom glass panels section.

All glass is quality-inspected prior to dispatch to ensure consistency, finish accuracy, and compliance with relevant glazing standards.

Pond Viewing Window Thickness Guide

There is no universal thickness guide for pond viewing windows.

The correct glass thickness depends on several key factors:

What determines the required thickness?

• Depth of water
• Overall span of the pond window
• Support conditions
• Whether the panel is supported on all four edges
• Installation method

Why thickness matters

As depth increases, water pressure increases proportionally. Thicker laminated units are typically required for deeper ponds to minimise deflection and maintain clear visibility without distortion.

Using glass that is too thin can lead to movement, stress fractures, chips or cracks over time. Over-specifying thickness can increase cost unnecessarily.

We assess each request individually to ensure the correct thickness is achieved for structural safety and long-term performance.

How to Install a Pond Viewing Window – Quick Guide from Fusion Glass Ltd.

Brickwork Rebate Method

This method creates a 45mm-wide rebate into your brick or sleeper structure on the pond’s interior. This matches the pond glass thickness and is pressed into the water pressure when the pond is filled, holding it firmly in place.

  • Preparation: Cut the brick or sleepers before laying, allowing an extra 5mm in height for packing.

  • Rebate Size: Make the recess 6 -10mm larger than your glass, leaving a 3 - 5mm gap filled with silicone.

  • Fitting: Use packers to level the glass, then seal with silicone. Then finish with a smooth render for a polished look.

After installation, you need to wait at least 24 - 48 hours to allow the sealant to cure fully before filling the pond with water and using.

Alternative Installation Options

  • Liner Method: Overlap the liner by 40mm around the glass, then silicone and cure for a secure fit.

  • Fibreglass Frame: Fix a fibreglass frame into a drilled hole, render, and silicon the glass into the frame for a sleek, professional look.

How to Maintain a Clear Pond Viewing Window

A pond viewing window offers a stunning underwater view of koi, aquatic plants, and water features. Regular cleaning is essential to prevent algae buildup and keep your pond looking its best all year round. Over time, algae naturally forms on pond glass, but with consistent maintenance, you can enjoy a clear, unobstructed view.

How Often to Clean Your Pond Glass

  • When algae is visible: Clean early for easier removal.

  • Weekly: Recommended for koi ponds with regular viewing.

  • Seasonally: Increase cleaning frequency during warm months when algae grows faster.

Best Tools for Cleaning Pond Glass

Avoid scratching your pond glass by using soft, pond-safe tools:

  • Shallow ponds: Microfibre cloths, soft sponges, Japanese matting.

  • Deeper ponds: Telescopic brushes, pond-safe cleaning tools, or DIY options like a dish brush on a pipe.

Tips for Keeping Your Pond View Clear

  • Clean regularly and lightly.

  • Use circular motions for an even finish.

  • Check water nutrient levels (nitrates, phosphates).

  • Limit direct sunlight to slow algae growth.

Keep Your Pond View Pristine

Regular, gentle cleaning with the right tools will help you enjoy a clear, beautiful underwater view. Maintain your pond glass for a stunning aquatic display all year round.
