How to Install a Frameless Glass Balustrade with the POSIglaze System
When it comes to premium frameless balustrade systems, POSIglaze is a top-tier choice. Known for its strength, precision, and versatility, POSIglaze is ideal for installations where you want a sleek, minimal look without compromising on compliance or structural performance. Whether you’re working on a raised terrace, balcony, or internal void, this system delivers a clean finish that meets the highest standards.
At Fusion Glass Ltd, we supply the full POSIglaze system along with custom-cut laminated glass panels for a hassle-free installation experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you install it confidently.
Why Choose POSIglaze?
POSIglaze is a fully adjustable dry-glaze balustrade system. That means it uses mechanical clamping cassettes instead of resins or adhesives, allowing you to install, align, and adjust glass quickly and cleanly. Once fitted, it’s incredibly solid—making it suitable for both domestic and commercial applications.
It can be base-fixed or side-mounted, and it works with 12mm to 21.5mm glass depending on the spec. It’s often used without a handrail for a truly frameless finish, though a rail can be added if needed for compliance or design reasons.
What You’ll Need
• POSIglaze base or side-mount aluminium channel
• POSIglaze cassette kits (rubber gaskets, clamping sections, adjustment screws)
• Laminated glass panels (typically 17.5mm or 21.5mm thick for no-handrail setups)
• Fixings for your base (resin anchors, through bolts, etc.)
• Spirit level, measuring tape, string line or laser level
• POSIglaze adjustment tool or standard ratchet
• Suction cups, rubber mallet, gloves, and safety gear
• Optional: channel cover plates or trim profiles
Step 1: Prepare Your Base
Start with a solid, level base. POSIglaze must be fixed into structural concrete, steel, or dense timber. Use a tape measure and string line to mark out your channel placement. Drill the fixing holes based on the pre-punched channel slots or your layout requirements.
Fix the channel using heavy-duty fixings like M10 bolts or resin anchors for concrete. Make sure it’s perfectly straight and level before continuing—this will save you major alignment issues later.
Step 2: Insert the Base Gasket and Setting Blocks
Fit the rubber base gasket inside the channel. This protects the glass from direct contact with the aluminium. Then, insert rubber setting blocks where each glass panel will sit. These typically go 50mm in from each end of the panel and help maintain an even top line.
Step 3: Lower in the Glass Panels
Using suction cups, carefully lift and lower each glass panel into the channel. It should rest securely on the setting blocks. Leave a 5mm expansion gap between each panel to allow for thermal movement and optional sealing.
Align the top edges with a laser level or string line as you go. Take your time—POSIglaze is adjustable, but starting level makes the job smoother.
Step 4: Fit and Adjust the Clamping Cassettes
This is where POSIglaze stands out. Each cassette contains a locking clamp system that you install on both sides of the glass.
1. Drop the cassettes into position along the glass edge.
2. Use the POSIglaze adjustment tool or a ratchet to tighten the mechanism.
3. As you tighten, the clamping sections push against the glass and lock it securely in place.
You can fine-tune the glass height and alignment as you go, which is ideal for longer runs or large panels.
Step 5: Finish and Clean
Once all panels are clamped and aligned:
• Clip on any decorative cover plates or trims to finish the channel edges.
• Clean the glass and channel with a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner.
• For external installs, apply a bead of silicone between panels for extra weather protection (optional).
Tips from Fusion Glass Ltd
• Measure your glass after installing the channel for the most accurate fit. Measure from the base of the channel to your desired glass height and subtract 10mm for clearance.
• Always use 17.5mm or 21.5mm laminated glass for frameless, no-handrail setups.
• Make sure your fixing substrate is fully solid—POSIglaze is designed to carry serious load.
