How to Choose the Right Glass Thickness

Choosing the correct thickness for your pond window is essential to ensure safety, durability, and optimal viewing experience. The ideal thickness depends primarily on the depth, size, and pressure your pond will exert on the glass. Below is a guideline to help you make an informed decision:

21.5mm : Designed for pond windows up to 400mm (16 inches) deep and up to 1600mm (63 inches) wide. Suitable for shallow or smaller ponds where lower pressure is expected.

25.5mm : Suitable for pond windows up to 600mm (24 inches) deep and up to 2000mm (79 inches) wide. Complies with moderate pond depths and larger viewing areas.

33mm : Ideal for pond windows up to 1000mm (39 inches) deep and around 2000mm (79 inches) wide. Offers increased strength for deeper ponds and larger glass panels, with 1000mm deep and 2000mm wide being common maximums for this thickness.

39mm : Suitable for pond windows up to 1000mm (39 inches) deep and up to 3000mm (118 inches) wide, providing maximum strength for substantial depths and sizes. For custom projects, 3000mm wide panels are available for broader installations.

44.5mm : Recommended for pond windows up to 1200mm (47 inches) deep and up to 3500mm (138 inches) wide. This thickness ensures safety and durability for large, deep water features.

Additional Recommendations

  • Rebate System: To achieve a sleek, flush finish, we recommend fitting your glass with a rebate system. This allows the glass to sit securely within the pond structure and creates a smooth edge that works well with pond liners.

  • Consultation & Professional Installation: While these guidelines provide a reliable starting point, we strongly advise consulting a professional for precise measurements and installation to ensure safety and longevity. When selecting your pond viewing window, it is essential to match the size thickness being ordered to your pond's actual dimensions. Issues can arise due to incorrect size, such as delays, extra charges, or rejection of the product upon delivery, so always double-check your measurements before ordering.

  • Safety Considerations: Always prioritize safety, especially for larger or deeper ponds. Laminated toughened glass is designed to withstand pressure, but proper installation is crucial to prevent breakage or accidents.

By following these guidelines and consulting with experts, you can select the perfect pond window thickness for a safe, beautiful, and functional pond feature.

Glass Finishing: Enhancing Clarity and Durability

When it comes to creating a truly stunning pond viewing window, the finishing of the glass is just as important as its strength. At Fusion Glass, every pond window glass panel is meticulously finished to ensure both safety and exceptional clarity. This process involves polishing the edges and dubbing the corners, resulting in a smooth, flawless finish that not only looks beautiful but also eliminates sharp edges for added safety, especially important in family gardens and koi pond settings.

Selecting the correct thickness for your pond window is crucial for both durability and peace of mind. For ponds up to 400mm deep and 1600mm wide, a minimum thickness of 21.5mm is recommended. For larger or deeper installations, thicker glass, such as 25.5mm or 33mm, may be necessary to withstand the increased water pressure and structural demands. Our team is always available to help you determine the correct thickness for your specific project, ensuring your pond window glass is made to the highest standards.

All our pond window glass is crafted from toughened laminated glass, providing extra strength and resilience against the elements. The glass is also heat-soaked, a process that further reduces the risk of spontaneous breakage, giving you confidence in the long-term safety and performance of your pond window. Each panel is finished with polished edges and corners dubbed, ensuring a seamless fit and a crystal-clear view of your fish and aquatic plants.
When planning your pond window installation, it’s important to consider logistics.

The average lead time for our pond viewing windows is currently around 15 working days, though this may be longer during peak periods or if your site has restricted access. Delivery is curb side only, so please ensure there are enough people on site to safely offload and handle your new window glass. This helps prevent accidental damage and ensures your glass arrives in perfect condition.

Upon delivery, we recommend thoroughly inspecting your pond window glass for any scratches, lamination smudges, chips, or other defects before signing for it. These issues must be identified at the point of delivery, as they may not be covered under warranty after this stage. Taking a few moments to check your glass can save time and effort should you encounter any problems.

For those seeking something truly unique, we also offer bespoke glass solutions for raised ponds, custom koi pond designs, and other special applications. Our experts can guide you in selecting the right glass thickness and finish for your project, ensuring a safe, durable, and visually stunning result. Whether you’re creating a tranquil garden retreat or a show-stopping feature for your home, our pond window glass is designed to deliver years of enjoyment and crystal-clear views of your fish and aquatic life.

Pond glass installation

How to Fit Your Pond Viewing Window – Expert Advice from Fusion Glass Ltd.

At Fusion Glass Ltd., we provide comprehensive guidance to help you achieve a professional, watertight pond glass installation that enhances the beauty and function of your water feature. Here are some of the most effective methods for fitting your pond viewing window, whether you’re working with brickwork or a fibreglass frame.

Brickwork Installation for Pond Glass

Installing pond glass into brickwork is a cost-effective and reliable approach. The process involves creating a 45mm rebate in the brick or sleeper structure on the pond’s interior. This rebate matches the thickness of your pond glass, and water pressure will naturally hold the glass securely against it once the pond is filled.

Preparation:
Ensure to cut the brick or sleeper blocks before laying, leaving an extra 5mm in height for spacers that support the glass.

Building the Rebate:
Your brickwork should form a recess approximately 6-10mm larger than the exact size of your pond glass, providing a 3-5mm gap around it. This gap will be filled with silicone to form a waterproof seal. Wait until all mortar or cement has fully cured before fitting the glass.

Rebate Illustration:

  • Glass Pressed into Rebate: Illustrates how the weight of the water secures the glass.

  • Rebate Placement: Cut into the pond’s interior side to ensure water pressure keeps the glass in place.

  • Adhesive Application: Applied all around the edge to maintain a strong seal and prevent leaks

Fitting the Glass:
Use packers underneath to keep the glass level. Clamp it into place temporarily, then fill the gap with silicone sealant. Once cured, apply a smooth render or plaster across the brickwork for a neat finish.

Preparing the Liner:
Mask off around 40mm from the edges of the glass on all sides where the liner will sit. When fitting the liner, it should sit flat against the glass and brickwork without creases or gaps, which are critical to prevent water pressure from dislodging it. Mark the liner where the masking tape is applied, then cut accordingly.

Sealing and Finishing:
Apply a bead of silicone around the edges of the glass. Carefully press the liner onto the silicone, using the masked edge as a guide, and leave a small amount of excess liner. Run your finger along the edge to ensure a smooth, neat finish, then remove the masking tape.

Below is a bird's eye view diagram illustrating the installation process:

This illustration shows the placement of the pond glass between the brickwork, with critical dimensions and the position of adhesive sealant indicated:

  • Glass Thickness: Ensures the glass fits snugly within the rebate.

  • 45mm Rebate: Guides the correct depth for secure placement.

  • Adhesive and Sealant: Shown in red, applied to ensure a watertight seal, with a recommended 3-5mm gap filled with sealant for optimal security and sealing.

Using a Fibreglass Frame with Pond Glass

Another professional option involves installing a fibreglass frame into a drilled opening in the brickwork. Render around the frame for a smooth, flush finish, then fix it securely using four screws for added stability. Insulation, such as a 1-inch Kingspan board, can be added for a more polished, flush appearance.

The fibreglass liner is applied inside the pond, covering the frame, with the pond glass siliconed into the frame for a secure fit.
