What Type of Glass Is Used for Pond Viewing Windows?

Pond viewing windows are manufactured using toughened laminated glass.

This construction combines multiple layers of toughened glass bonded together with a structural interlayer. You can view similar structural laminated options within our custom glass panels range.

The result is:

  • Extra strength

  • Added stability

  • Increased safety

  • Long-term durability

Unlike single toughened glass panels, toughened laminated glass retains integrity even if one layer becomes damaged. This makes it suitable for structural pond walls and raised pond installations where safety is essential.

For projects requiring additional reassurance, calculations can be reviewed in conjunction with a glass structural engineer. Where necessary, a glass structural engineer can provide a specification to confirm the exact glass thickness required for the intended depth and span.

For deeper ponds requiring thicker laminated units, options such as 21.5mm toughened laminate glass, 25.5mm toughened laminate glass, or 33mm toughened laminate glass may be appropriate depending on depth and structural span.

How Thick Should a Pond Viewing Window Be?

There is no universal thickness.

The correct thickness depends on:

  • Water depth

  • Width of the pond window

  • Overall glass size

  • Installation method

  • Whether the panel is supported on all four edges

Water pressure increases significantly as depth increases. A deeper pond or bigger koi pond window will require thick glass to resist bowing and maintain a flat finish.

As a guide, shallow decorative water features may use thinner laminated panels, while deeper raised ponds typically require significantly thicker laminated units for safety and performance. Larger installations may require structural panels such as 33mm pond viewing windows or 39mm pond viewing windows, depending on project requirements.

Every pond glass window supplied by Fusion Glass is manufactured to exact specifications. We assess the required depth and span before confirming the correct thickness.

Bespoke Glass for Custom Pond Designs

No two ponds are identical.

Whether you are building a fibreglass frame pond, a brick-built raised pond wall, or incorporating a viewing window into a cement structure with pond liner detailing, the glass must be cut precisely and finished correctly. We supply bespoke glass panels within our custom glass panel range with:

  • Polished edges

  • Edges polished for safe handling

  • Dubbed corners where required

  • One-piece laminated units

  • Flush finish or flat finish options

Each pond viewing window is produced to match your frame and wall design. We supply panels suitable for fibreglass, brick, block and liner-based systems.

Raised Ponds and Structural Considerations

A raised pond wall filled with water places a continuous load against the viewing window. Over time, durability matters just as much as initial strength.

Our pond window glass is:

  • Toughened

  • Laminated

  • Heat-soaked where required

  • Manufactured for long-term safety

  • Designed to withstand seasonal temperature change

In winter conditions, freeze cycles and temperature fluctuation can affect structural materials. Toughened laminated glass provides enhanced durability and resistance compared to a single toughened panel.

For additional pond protection, you may also wish to consider pond jump guards to help protect koi fish in raised installations.

Correct silicone bonding and frame support are essential during installation, but Fusion Glass focuses solely on supplying the correctly specified glass panel.

Glass Size, Specification and Delivery

We manufacture pond glass windows to the exact specification provided. To prepare your order, we require:

  • Required glass size

  • Depth of water

  • Wall structure type

  • Frame or rebate detail

All panels are securely packaged to maintain edge protection during delivery. We provide fast delivery across the UK, ensuring your pond project remains on schedule. On delivery day, the panel arrives ready for installation by your chosen contractor or builder.

How to Fit Your Pond Viewing Window – Expert Advice from Fusion Glass Ltd.

At Fusion Glass Ltd., we provide comprehensive guidance to help you achieve a professional, watertight pond glass installation that enhances the beauty and function of your water feature. Here are some of the most effective methods for fitting your pond viewing window, whether you’re working with brickwork or a fibreglass frame.

Brickwork Installation for Pond Glass

Installing pond glass into brickwork is a cost-effective and reliable approach. The process involves creating a 45mm rebate in the brick or sleeper structure on the pond’s interior. This rebate matches the thickness of your pond glass, and water pressure will naturally hold the glass securely against it once the pond is filled.

Preparation:
Ensure to cut the brick or sleeper blocks before laying, leaving an extra 5mm in height for spacers that support the glass.

Building the Rebate:
Your brickwork should form a recess approximately 6-10mm larger than the exact size of your pond glass, providing a 3-5mm gap around it. This gap will be filled with silicone to form a waterproof seal. Wait until all mortar or cement has fully cured before fitting the glass.

Rebate Illustration:

  • Glass Pressed into Rebate: Illustrates how the weight of the water secures the glass.

  • Rebate Placement: Cut into the pond’s interior side to ensure water pressure keeps the glass in place.

  • Adhesive Application: Applied all around the edge to maintain a strong seal and prevent leaks

Fitting the Glass:
Use packers underneath to keep the glass level. Clamp it into place temporarily, then fill the gap with silicone sealant. Once cured, apply a smooth render or plaster across the brickwork for a neat finish.

Preparing the Liner:
Mask off around 40mm from the edges of the glass on all sides where the liner will sit. When fitting the liner, it should sit flat against the glass and brickwork without creases or gaps, which are critical to prevent water pressure from dislodging it. Mark the liner where the masking tape is applied, then cut accordingly.

Sealing and Finishing:
Apply a bead of silicone around the edges of the glass. Carefully press the liner onto the silicone, using the masked edge as a guide, and leave a small amount of excess liner. Run your finger along the edge to ensure a smooth, neat finish, then remove the masking tape.

Below is a bird's eye view diagram illustrating the installation process:

This illustration shows the placement of the pond glass between the brickwork, with critical dimensions and the position of adhesive sealant indicated:

  • Glass Thickness: Ensures the glass fits snugly within the rebate.

  • 45mm Rebate: Guides the correct depth for secure placement.

  • Adhesive and Sealant: Shown in red, applied to ensure a watertight seal, with a recommended 3-5mm gap filled with sealant for optimal security and sealing.

Using a Fibreglass Frame with Pond Glass

Another professional option involves installing a fibreglass frame into a drilled opening in the brickwork. Render around the frame for a smooth, flush finish, then fix it securely using four screws for added stability. Insulation, such as a 1-inch Kingspan board, can be added for a more polished, flush appearance.

The fibreglass liner is applied inside the pond, covering the frame, with the pond glass siliconed into the frame for a secure fit.

These installation methods are common practices recommended by professionals. For best results, we advise consulting with a qualified pond installer. Fusion Glass Ltd. accepts no liability for damages or issues resulting from DIY installation.
